Keeping Up with Google and AI Search

Trying to handle organic visibility while keeping up with Google and AI search changes can feel like chasing a moving target. As a marketing manager, I’m always looking for ways to help my clients get noticed online.

I recently tuned into a webinar hosted by Innovation Factory called “Sales PWR Hour: Show Up First – How to Build Authority in Local Search & AI.” It was actually my first time attending one of their sessions, but it definitely won’t be my last. The presenter, David Hills, shared some fantastic insights (you can catch the full recorded session on YouTube here).

As I watched, one major takeaway stood out to me above everything else: managing your digital presence is absolutely not a “one and done” task. And if you’re a busy business owner, it’s going to take some real time.

Here is what I learned about what the algorithms actually care about right now, and why it requires constant maintenance.

Feeding Your Google Business Profile

I used to think a Google Business Profile (GBP) was just for local coffee shops or retail stores. It turns out, even for B2B startups, your GBP is the “anchor” that algorithms use to verify you actually exist and are trustworthy.

But here’s the catch—you have to constantly feed and interact with it:

  • The 24-Hour Review Rule: You need to respond to all reviews quickly, especially the negative ones. Google notices how fast you reply.
  • Stop with the Text Overlays: If you post updates or photos, the automated filters are now so aggressive that text on top of an image can get flagged as spam. Keep your photos clean and authentic.
  • Watch Out for “Local Guides”: Did you know random users can suggest edits to your hours or services, and Google might just accept them? You have to regularly audit your own profile to ensure no one has accidentally changed your info.

AI Search Feeds on Your Website

When people use tools like ChatGPT or Google’s AI Overviews, the backend systems search the web to summarize an answer. If your website fundamentals (like clean H1 tags and clear meta descriptions) aren’t perfectly formatted, you simply won’t get picked up. We’ve talked before about how AI is changing the landscape of B2B marketing, and optimizing your site to play nice with modern Google and AI search engines is a massive part of that shift.

Furthermore, video is a major priority right now. To stand out, businesses now need to maintain an active, branded YouTube channel alongside their text content.

The Reality Check for Founders

When you add up managing reviews, posting clean photos, monitoring for unauthorized profile edits, updating website tags, and creating short-form video – it is a massive time commitment!

As we emphasized in our post on the importance of B2B social media consistency, staying visible online requires showing up regularly. But for a busy B2B founder or a small startup team, trying to do all of this consistently while actually running your business is incredibly overwhelming.

The reality is that succeeding in Google and AI search requires continuous effort. That is exactly where having the right support, like a dedicated virtual assistant or marketing partner, comes into play. You focus on building your product and closing deals, and let someone else handle the daily feeding and watering of the algorithms.
