Startup and Small Business Events You Don’t Want to Miss in November 2011

For our newsletter, our team compiles a list of all the events we will be attending for the upcoming month, as well as some additional events we believe useful to the startup and small business industry. If you missed our newsletter, we will be posting a blog with featured events the first week of every month.

The events we focus on are primarily in Toronto, the GTA, Guelph, Kitchener-Waterloo. St. Catharines and Hamilton. Take a look through the events we are suggesting for this month. Silicon Halton: Leverage LinkedIn to Recruit Top Talent For Your Business
When: Tuesday, November 8, 7 p.m.
Where: 575 Ontario Street South Milton, Ontario
Cost: Free

This Silicon Halton event will focus on the value of LinkedIn and how companies leverage it to find the best talent, create brand awareness, grow their network and engage with others in their industry. Andy Solty, Account Executive from LinkedIn will be the guest speaker. This event is great for those in any size company. AccelerateTO
When: Wednesday, November 9, 6:30 p.m. – late
Where: 100 Queens Park, Toronto, ON
Cost: Free

AccelerateTO brings together technology entrepreneurs, influencers and investors. Chris O’Neill, Managing Director at Google Canada, will discuss the Google culture and how the company rose from start-up to international success. This event is great for employees – in all positions – at a startup company. If you wish to connect to someone on our team, Mark Elliott will be attending.

DemoCampHamilton
When: Monday, December 5, 6:30 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Where: The Arnie Student Pub at Mohawk College – 135 Fennell Avenue West
Cost: Free

The format of DemoCamp is as follows: Keynote speaker along with five software demos (each one five minutes), along with five minutes of Q&A. After the presentations conclude, there will be a chance for general socializing.

The keynote speaker for this event will be inventor Dan Zen. Dan will share his secret creative techniques using new types of iPhone, Android and Blackberry mobile games as examples. If you wish to connect to someone on our team, Mark Elliott will be attending.

StartUp Drinks Hamilton
When: Thursday, November 10, 6 p.m.
Where: The Winking Judge @ 25 Augusta Street, Hamilton
Cost: Free

Startup Drinks provides an open space for entrepreneurs and small business owners to connect and share ideas. There are no presentations or pitches, just conversation and networking. To meet some of the up-and-coming people in the startup community, this is a great event to attend.

Entrepreneur Week – Communitech
When: November 8, 9, 11, 17, 23
Where: The Tannery, 151 Charles Street West, Kitchener
Cost: Free

Communitech will be hosting a week of events for the entrepreneur community. The events will include: Entrepreneur Week Kick-off with Ryan Blair, Enterpreneurfest with Garry Tan, Communitech 2011 Entrepreneur Week Gala and Inductions to the ‘Waterloo Region Entrepreneur Hall of Fame,’ Entrepreneur Week Partner Showcase, Enterpreneurfest with Eric Ries, Communitech AGM 2011 and Mississauga TechVibe Recruitment Event hosted by Communitech.

StartUp Weekend Toronto
When: November 18-20, 2011
Where: 639 Queen St. West, Toronto
Cost: Free

Startup Weekend Toronto is an event aimed at community building. Participants will gather together with local developers, marketers, designers, enthusiasts and startup companies in just 54 hours.

Jeff Jarvis Launches Public Party
When: Thursday, November 17, 6 p.m.
Where: Rosehill Venue Lounge, 6 Rosehill Avenue, Toronto
Cost: $25

This meetup will feature Jeff Jarvis and hear him discuss his new book, Public Parts: How Sharing in the Digital Age Improves the Way We Work and Live.

Third Tuesday (being hosted this time on a Thursday) is a community-oriented, volunteer-drive event. It is a great event for anyone in a startup, small-medium business and larger company.

m-Commerce
When: Monday, November 7, @ 5:30 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Where: MaRS Discovery District, 101 College St. Toronto
Cost: Free

The topic for this Mobile Monday is m-Commerce panel discussion. Moderators will include Christie Christelis, Founder and President of Technology Strategies International.

MobileMonday is a global network of mobile industry visionaries, developers and influentials who gather in an ‘open-source forum’ to share best practices and trends from global markets, foster cooperation and cultivate cross-border business development through virtual and live networking events.

Entrepreneurship 101: Building a Business Model
When:November 16, 6 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Where:MaRS Discovery District, 101 College St., Toronto
Cost:Free

The Entrepreneurship 101 sessions are a great resource for entrepreneurs and those involved or interested in the startup community. This session will focus on the strategy behind building a business model and how you are going to make money with your product and/or service.

Where: Grace O’Malleys, 14 Duncan St., Toronto
Cost:Free

Startup Drinks provides an open space for entrepreneurs and small business owners to connect and share ideas. There are no presentations or pitches, just conversation and networking. To meet some of the up-and-coming people in the startup community, this is a great event to attend.
