Startup and Small Business Events You Don’t Want to Miss in October 2011

For our newsletter, our team compiles a list of all the events we will be attending for the upcoming month, as well as some additional events we believe useful to the startup and small business industry. If you missed our newsletter, we will be posting a blog with featured events the first week of every month.

The events we focus on are primarily in Toronto, the GTA, Guelph, Kitchener-Waterloo. St. Catharines and Hamilton. Take a look through the events we are suggesting for this month. Basic Nuts and Bolts of Building a Business
When: October 19, 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Where: MaRS Auditorium, 101 College Street, Toronto ON
Cost: Free

Starting your own business? This MaRS lecture will review the legal and tax considerations of starting your own business. You will be introduced to the importance of distribution partners, industry contacts, lawyers and human resource specialists.

How Open Source Can Ensure Success for Technology Startups
When: October 11, 12:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Where: MaRS Discovery District, MaRS Studio, 101 College Street, Toronto ON
Cost: Free

This session will look at the impact open source has had for technology startups. Open source affects sales, marketing, go-to-market strategies and product development and can accelerate a technology startup. The session will also involve a case study of a successful open source database company.

Marketing for Tech Startups – Getting the Fundamentals Right
When: October 26, 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Where: MaRS Auditorium, 101 College Street, Toronto ON

Are you a startup founder or employee? This MaRS session will go over the fundamental concepts and principles for marketing in an early stage startup.

Silicon Halton
When: October 11, 7 p.m.
Where: Emma’s Back Porch, 2084 Old Lakeshore Road, Burlington ON
Cost: Free

Attend this event to discuss the steps to be taken based on business, personal and productivity needs in the workplace. Keynote presenter Robert Duvall has created a panel at the end of the discussion to explore what happens when things go wrong and when they go right.

Innovation Night
When: October 12, 7 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Where: Atrium at McMaster Innovation Park
Cost: Free

Innovation Night is a night for innovators and entrepreneurs to share and develop their ideas, practice and perfect their pitch and present to their peers and the local innovation community.

Startup Drinks Hamilton
When: October 13, 6 p.m.
Where: Kelsey’s Restaurant (the downstairs pub!) 875 Main Street West, Hamilton ON
Cost: Free

Startup Drinks provides an open space for entrepreneurs and small business owners to connect and share ideas. There are no presentations or pitches, just conversation and networking. To meet some of the up-and-coming people in the startup community, this is a great event to attend.

Communitech Tech Working Breakfast
When: October 19, 7:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.
Where: The Tannery Event Centre, 151 Charles Street West, Kitchener ON
Cost: Free for Communitech members, Non-member ($45.20)

The Techworking Breakfast features speaker Dan Shimmerman of Varicent Software. Dan is the company’s President and CEO. CloudCamp Toronto

Hamilton Startup Weekend
When: October 21-23, 2011
Where: McMaster Innovation Park, 175 Longwood Road South, Hamilton, ON
Cost: Technical – Early Bird ($75), Non-Technical – Early Bird ($75), Technical ($99), Non-Technical ($99)

Startup weekend is a 54 hour event. The focus is to build a web or mobile application which could form the basis of a credible business by the end of the weekend. People from a variety of skill sets, including software development, graphic design and business people, are brought together to build applications and develop a commercial case around them.

DemoCamp
When: October 12, 2011, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Where: Ted Rogers School of Management, Ryerson University, 55 Dundas St. W, Toronto
Cost: Early Bird ($11.24), Late bloomer ($21.49), Ryerson Students, Faculty or Alumi (See registration page)

Elmer Sotto, head of Growth for Facebook Canada, will be the keynote speaker at this DemoCamp. Along with Elmer’s keynote speech, companies will be presenting and demonstrating their product/service and in exchange receive product/pitch feedback. Whether you are the entrepreneur, working at a startup or just live and breathe tech stuff, there is something for you at DemoCamp. Companies are encouraged to present if they have a company they think others should know about, however, you can attend whether you are a presenter or just a visitor.
