The Power of Social Media on Sales and Marketing

Social Media

What you need to know about the power of social media on sales and marketing in this Q&A with former Sales & Marketing Specialist, Stephanie Goodman.

What I Learned About Social Media From my Post-Secondary Education

Nothing!

After graduating from Wilfrid Laurier University in April 2010 with an HBA in Communications Studies, I thought I was prepared for anything. That was until I started working in marketing and found out how much social media had grown (without me) over the past few months. Needless to say, when it came to digital marketing, my post-secondary education did not prepare me.

What I’m Learning From Working for VA Partners

Social media is not going anywhere!

Twitter is used to engage, interact, form opinions, share insights and make connections with others in your industry. Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook are powerful tools that have the power to promote a brand, help a startup get off its feet and generate revenue for businesses.

What I Learned From Research

Take a look at MaRS DD for lecture series and events

  • Don’t rely on one social media platform to be successful. In fact, you will be more successful if you engage in different platforms to reach your customers.
  • Always be professional.
  • Know your audience – if they’re not on Facebook, don’t use Facebook.
  • Don’t set up an account on one of these platforms and leave it – it will be more damaging than not setting up one at all. Take a look at @erinbury or @markevans to see how consistent activity can generate followers

What I Learned From My Co-Workers at VA Partners

  • Offering advice in your field of expertise is a great marketing technique to draw people to your site and your services.
  • Karma. If you see one of your clients has won an award, a new deal, or someone in your industry has great tips or advice, RT them. You will be giving credit to others where credit is deserved, also putting you on their radar.

What I Learned on my Own

  • Use social media as any other marketing platform and pay close attention to everything you send out, RT and the people you are RT by.
  • Enhance your connections by staying up-to-date with your social media account. Divide up your time during the morning, afternoon and night to see what people are talking about. Missing out on conversation could result in missed opportunities.

The missing link in my education was material addressing how powerful social media is as a communication tool. Perhaps my professors could have taught us how to utilize social media instead of teaching us how to hide the Facebook or Twitter webpage during lecture.
