Golden Horseshoe Venture Forum

I am pleased to announce that we are the newest sponsors of the Golden Horseshoe Venture Forum (GHVF), a networking event that allows a variety of financiers and service providers to network and meet interesting up and coming companies from a variety of industries.

The last event, on October 6th, was focussed on Green/Cleantech and had three very interesting companies present including:

  1. CLINTCH Capital – A provider of financing for commercial solar PV solutions in Ontario.
  2. Solar Sentry – A supplier of solar PV software monitoring solutions that can improve ROIs
  3. Venti-Tech – An early stage wind turbine concept.

All the companies were very interesting and it spoke to some of the great innovation and ideas that Ontario’s green energy commitment is fostering. A few key points I pulled from the presentations they gave include:

CLNTCH Capital

Financing a solar PV solution is the way to go if you have the balance sheet to secure the funding. This allows you to utilize someone else’s capital, maximize your usage of the capital cost allowance and interest expense over the systems first 3-4 years thereby driving up your IRR’s substantially. Well over 100% in some cases.

Solar Sentry

Solar PV panel degradation is a major problem and needs to be actively addressed if the system owner wants to ensure their ROI. There is software on the market today, from players like Solar Sentry, that can effectively manage this and ensure end life ROIs are maintained.

Venti-Tech

Interesting company with some IP around the use of a cover or shield to help drive up wind speeds running by the turbine blades and the turbine design also leads itself to capture substantially more of the winds energy. This once more R&D is done and then commercialized could help with wind turbine ROIs.

During the event, a new form of networking was tried out, and I thought to great success. It entailed taking 5-10 minutes at the beginning of the event to formally meet the people at your table and for each person to do their own “Elevator Pitch”. I found it a refreshing way to get a better understanding of the individuals around my table and for me to present myself. Normally networking at events can be a bit challenging but this semi-formal style was a refreshing new style.
